Is Camino de Santiago Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

If you didn’t know by now, Camino de Santiago is a world-renowned pilgrimage route in Northeastern Spain. Although Spain may be a relatively safe country, many women often feel as though they need to research whether the route is safe for a solo traveler. The good news is that many women undergo this trip by themselves each year, but we will nonetheless dive into just how safe (or unsafe) it really is.

General Safety Overview

Camino de Santiago isn’t just one route. But, generally, most routes are in the North. This area of Spain is generally considered safe for travelers, including solo women. In 2023, over 500,000 pilgrims received their Compostela certificates, with minimal reports of serious incidents.

The Camino Francés, the most popular route, is particularly well-patrolled and frequented by fellow pilgrims, meaning there’s a sense of “safety in numbers”. Local authorities and the pilgrimage community are committed to maintaining a secure environment, and of course, the walks can be done with a guide or in a group if preferred.

The paths are well-marked, and help is usually available in case of emergencies. You’re never too far from the closest village or amenity. But, there may be times were it’s remote, with poor signal, and very hot in the summer. Your biggest concern is by far the prospect of getting lost in the heat, so make sure to prepare in this sense (plenty of water, electrolyte tablets, a hat, and learn a few Spanish phrases in case you need to ask for help).

Tips for Solo Female Travelers

  • Choosing Routes: Opt for well-traveled routes like Camino Francés if you feel safer with more people around. These routes have more facilities, too.
  • Accommodation: Stay in official albergues (pilgrim hostels) and accommodations known for their safety standards. Avoid remote or unofficial lodgings and book ahead.
  • Communication: Always carry a mobile phone and keep emergency contacts handy. Let someone know your daily plans and check in regularly. If you want to be extra safe, take a satellite phone, and learn a few Spanish phrases.
  • Traveling in Peak Season: Consider walking during the peak season (spring to early autumn) when the trail is busier and safer. There is a greater chance of meeting other pilgrims. But, find a week when it will be less hot, such as mid or late spring.
  • Avoiding Isolation: Avoid isolated areas after dark and stick to groups when possible. To avoid walking after dark, make sure you understand your route and try to avoid really long daily distances.

Experiences of Past Travelers

Many solo female travelers report positive experiences on the Camino. The “Camino Sisterhood” and other supportive online communities offer advice and share experiences, fostering a sense of camaraderie and reassurance that it has been done many times before.

There are plenty of stories from forums and blogs about finding lifelong friends and support networks. So, even if you begin as a solo trekker, you may not be solo for long.

Conclusion

While the Camino de Santiago is generally safe for solo female travelers, proper preparation is crucial. Always remain aware of your surroundings and make friends where you can. Otherwise, most of your efforts should be spent on general safety concerns, such as getting lost, picking up an injury, and the heat.
