Water droplets on a lotus leaf

I always found it so interesting to see how the lotus leafs seem to hold water drops. Their superhydrophobic surface helps water stay in that spherical form, rather than spreading out and wetting the leafs. What happens is that the water rolls off, carrying dirt with it. This is due to the series of tiny protrusions covering the lotus leafs, along with the protecting wax.

The nature is indeed amazing! Click on the photo for a larger view!

I photographed this leaf at the Snagov lake, near Bucharest, Romania.
