A look at Lanzarote beyond its beautiful beaches and brilliant nightlife

When it comes to holidays in Lanzarote, what do you think about first? It’s quite likely that stunning beaches and a buzzing nightlife sprang to mind, but there is so much more to the Spanish island than just these things alone. In fact, I believe that this beautiful destination offers something for everybody and it’s definitely a place I suggest you considering visiting on your next break.

Of course, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with spending time on a sandy stretch to soak up some sunshine or hitting the local bars and clubs once the sun has gone down but Lanzarote has plenty of other things to offer. This part of the Canary Islands is home to a great range of wildlife, while there is also a rich human history that is just waiting to be explored.

Book a flight to Lanzarote through a leading operator like Monarch and you’ll have the chance to take in a diverse variety of attractions. Here are some of the places that you should make an effort to see.

Timanfaya National Park

If you’re keen to go on a holiday that gives you the opportunity to connect with nature, Lanzarote will certainly appeal to you, not least of all because it’s home to the stunning Timanfaya National Park. Situated in the west of the island, this astounding reserve spans just over 5 hectares, so you should find there is lots of space to stretch your legs.

Among the many hiking trails that can be followed is the Termesana route. Stretching about 3 km, this path sees you come into close contact with a towering volcano that, in a series of eruptions between 1730 and 1736, dramatically shaped the landscape. A number of guided tours led by an English-speaking local expert are offered, though if you want to go on such excursions you are advised to book in advance.
You can expect to take in a variety of landscapes as you walk around, with the terrain consisting of everything from blowholes and hot springs to black sand beaches and sheer cliffs. If you fancy doing something really different, however, you can take a camel ride along the southern slopes of the Timanfaya Mountain. Head to the Echadero de los Camellos area and you’ll have the opportunity to observe the park’s astounding scenery while riding on the back of one of these four-legged creatures.

Chinijo Archipelago Nature Reserve

The Chinijo Archipelago Nature Reserve is another park that is well worth exploring while on holiday in Lanzarote. Located in the north of the island near the popular resort town of Teguise, this protected area is dominated by two large volcanic craters – Alegranza and Montana Clara, which are 289 m and 250 m high respectively.

I also recommend you keep an eye out for some of the local wildlife. The park is something of a breeding haven for waterfowl, with little shearwaters and white-faced storm petrels just two of the species that can be seen here. Other creatures that can be seen here are the fish eagle and Egyptian vulture, while there are more than 220 species of fish that swim in the local waters.

Cesar Manrique Museum

As well being a haven for nature lovers, Lanzarote is a magical destination for art fans. Head to Teguise and you’ll get to explore the home of one of Spain’s most loved cultural icons, Cesar Manrique.

Take the time to wander around the Cesar Manrique Museum and you will not only have the chance to observe several of the artist’s paintings and sculptures, but can also check out the studio where he worked. Make sure you appreciate the building’s architecture too; the upper floor is largely modelled on traditional Lanzarote design though it also contains several modern features, including French windows.
