How romance literally hit me in the face in Paris [Be warned: you will laugh!]

It’s already February 14th here, exactly 00:00 when I’m starting to write this post. Yes, it is a post that will make you laugh, linked, in a way, to Valentine’s Day, but in fact a funny moment from Paris.

First of all, keep in mind that, like I already mentioned here on the blog, I very much wanted to see Paris and I was so happy when the opportunity presented itself last year. I knew many people consider Paris to be a romantic city and, as I was going with my husband on a short, but long needed vacation (well, part of it at least, as my husband had to work half of the time, but it was OK), I wanted to enjoy this romantic side with him.

Eiffel Tower - trocadero

But I didn’t get the romantic Paris. Yes, unfortunately, I didn’t understand why people call it a city of love.

I took walks in the city by night, even was in the Eiffel Tower at sunset and afterward… I saw the yellow lights colouring the city at night – beautiful, but hey, I have the same lights in Bucharest, Romania, of course on different buildings.

How did the romance literally hit me in the face?

Well, we just left the Eiffel Tower, discovered that the famous gardens in front of it close at 7PM so no chance to walk and admire them and the statues. We ended up visiting the The Luxor Obelisque (Obelisk) and decided to go further, on Champs-Élysées, toward the Arc de Triomphe (the original one, as we have one in Bucharest as well – yes, Bucharest was called, for many, many years, the “Little Paris”).

At some point, walking on Champs-Élysées, I told my husband that I don’t get the romantic Paris. I don’t see its romantic side. And you know what he said to me?:

– Don’t worry. It will hit you at the next intersection.

And it did. And here you’ll laugh.

As we were walking, just moments later (a couple of minutes or so), it started to rain.

No, it was not romantic. We were walking, my feet were killing me – but I wanted to see the Arc de Triomphe up close, we were in a bit of a hurry (on our way to meet with some friends) and it was getting colder. No. no romance at all at that point. I just got annoyed. At the first metro station we decided to enter – so yes, we didn’t get very close to the arch – we saw it, but… and, later that evening, we had to walk again in the rain, wind blowing, towards a restaurant with our friends.

So yes, what could be considered as a romantic moment – rain starting as we were walking on Champs-Élysées, wasn’t in fact romantic at all. In a way, in a literal way, romance hit me in the face, as my husband predicted, just not the way I wanted or in an efficient manner as a matter of a fact.

It is however a really funny travel memory and as it is Valentine’s today, I decided it is worth sharing it with you :). I hope you enjoyed it and laughed.
