BIAS 2013 (Bucharest International Air Show): Great Event with Spectacular Moments

This year’s edition of Bucharest International Air Show was the fifth one, thus making this event a regular one in Romania’s capital. And I must say I am happy to know that such a spectacular event celebrating flight is taking place in Bucharest each year, especially since Romanians had a huge contribution to building airplanes! – I won’t go into many details, but I do recommend you to find our more about Traian Vuia (who designed, built and tested a tractor configuration monoplane), Aurel Vlaicu (also engineer, pioneer in flying, inventor) and Henri Coanda (also physicist, inventor and so on).

In 2013 the Romanian Air Club – Aeroclubul Romaniei – celebrates 90 years. This institution is very active, and many wonderful and talented pilots, including aerobatic pilots, started here. So this year’s edition was dedicateed to this institution and all of the pilots who worked and learned here over the years. I must say I liked the fact that the pilots with the B25 from Flying Bulls presented a Romanian flag when landing in the second part of the show.

As you might remember, I managed to attend in last year’s edition too – you can read and see almost 40 photos from BIAS 2012 here.

Bucharest International Air Show 2013 was a one day event with the show split in two parts. The first one started early in the morning – around 8.30 – and finished around 3 PM.

The second one started a little after 6 PM and lasted until 9 PM, followed by a concert and a really awesome over 7 minutes fireworks show!

The second part was indeed spectacular as it included flights at dusk – spectacular, yet dangerous as well. But enough said: let’s look at the photos!

One of the first ways of transportation by air: a hot air baloon:

There were some Cessna airplanes:

Some were surprised to hear that one of the wings from this formation was a former prime-minister of Romania – Calin Popescu Tariceanu.

There was an exercise performed by Ministry of Internal Affairs’s representatives .

One of the most impressive airplanes – especially for the sound of the engines – is the B-25J Mitchell – a converted WW2 bomber – presented by the Flying Bulls team.

And a truly impressive young pilot (23 years old) – aerobatic gliding world champion: Luca Bertossio.

Another interesting moment was presented by a Tarom airplane accompanied by The Hawks of Romania team.
