The top travel search site, momondo.co.uk has a brand new Flight Insight tool that looks through thousands of prices on flights that are departing from the United Kingdom, to conclude when it can be the cheapest to fly.
Test searches carried out in 2013, on the site’s thirteen most popular flight routes departing from London, suggest that this week momondo uncovered a new flight pattern. They found that generally on average the most reduced flights are found when booking on an average of 59 days in advance of the departure date.
The routes that were tested departing from London were to:
- New York
- Los Angeles
The statistics for these particular routes show that, those travellers who booked in advance with momondo could save an average of 38% on air fares compared to booking the same flight on the actual day of departure. All of these cheaper flight prices are found by booking between 54 and 66 days in advance.
Momondo found the best saving to be made was on departures to Dublin. These were on average 51% cheaper at around £167.
Spokesperson Julie Pedersen at momondo says that: “We are pleased to uncover some new trends around booking flights, proving it is always cheapest to book on average two months ahead of travel. The surprising fact for us also, was that at this point, flights are usually at their cheapest. So travellers need not book 6 or 12 months in advance, to find the best airfares.”
The cost of a ticket is influenced by a number of factors including, the date of departure, the time of day of the flight, the season, which airlines are serving the route, and also the airports of departure and arrival.
This new tool, “Flight Insight,” was started by momondo to provide customers with an increased insight into how ticket prices are set. It shows which factors to look out for when searching for the cheapest price. Once an individual specifies a particular flight search, the tool can easily found at the top of the search results for momondo. “Flight Insight,” is currently available on over 1,800 routes and it is also being added to further routes everyday.
